Laptop Computer Security

Rip of the Week: 1,700 School District Employees Breached

In a cookie-cutter breach incident with all the normal characteristics, the Francis Howell School District is warning employees that a laptop computer theft could have compromised personal information.

Thanks much to Redemtech for the summary on this one.

The laptop was “password protected” according to the district, and thus “it is unlikely the information has been accessed.” And, as usual, victims are being given some ID theft insurance or credit monitoring.

It’s probably not worth reiterating all the same points here as on most other breaches, but suffice it to say that victims of this theft should not be confident “that the information probably has not been accessed” when the buyer of the stolen laptop can easily do so. The data wasn’t encrypted, and it sounds like there was no tracking.

So, we must assume “another one bites the dust.”
