This Rip of the Week has good news and bad news. First, the bad news. The Salvation Army in Union, SC was broken into. Three times. In two months. In the latest burglary, a laptop was stolen, which contained information about the people the Salvation Army was helping. News Channel 7 reports, and thanks to Redemtech for the tip.

But there is good news. According to officials at the Salvation Army, “We’re password protected and then we have two more layers of protection… Their information, I feel very confident that it’s secure. It’s very difficult to break into our systems that we’ve been using.”

Of course, the “password protection” part doesn’t inspire confidence, as usual. But multi-layered security? That’s a very good sign. Let’s hope it holds, indeed.

This is another one of those stories. Kristin Smith, a doctoral student at The Ohio State University, has been researching detection methods for multiple sclerosis. That research has been ongoing for the past five years. NBC 4 in Columbus reports.

Smith’s laptop, a MacBook Pro, was stolen while she stopped for a $3 hamburger. In perhaps one mildly bright spot, she actually has a backup for most of the five years of research. However, she has none for the past six months, and those months were when the most important part of the research had occurred.

Whole life on the laptop, no backup, and no MyLaptopGPS. Every 12 seconds, another laptop stolen. Truly the most shocking part of this story is the lack of backup–one spilled coffee, one wrong drop of the machine, one slip and that data could have been gone. Of course people are not expected to be tech experts, but putting all your eggs in one single basket without even so much as a backup of the data is simply, stunningly, risky.

We should all be warned by this. Most folks won’t be–it will happen again. How about you?

He stole a laptop, then used that laptop to hack into his ex-employer’s database to gain access to personnel records that contained salary information. He then emailed this information to about 400 employees of the company.

An alert systems admin intercepted the emails and deleted them, but Parker found himself smack in the middle of a courtroom hoping to fend off a jail sentence.

You just never know what a stolen laptop will be good for. Many thanks to security curmudgeon for the lead.

A somewhat curious, and rather terse, laptop theft is this week’s Rip. Thanks to kirniki over at DataLossDB for the tip, National Underwriter reports that Thrivent Financial experienced a break-in at an office in Pennsylvania. A laptop was stolen, which contained personal information, including names, addresses, Social Security Numbers and health information.

But what is curious is that the laptop “had safeguards to protect sensitive information, including strong password protection and encryption.” Even still, the company is offering free credit monitoring.

No report of the number of victims has been given.

The response to the “breach” makes one wonder if there’s more to the story. Was the encryption not properly applied (very common)? Did the employee tape a handwritten plain-text passphrase note onto the palm rest (it happens–that’s why MyLaptopGPS offers Remote Decryption Kill)? Tough to say, and it’s all speculation. Something just seems odd about the reports and the response.

We will have to see if it shows up on the HHS Hall of Shame or not.
